About this collection

Recipe books, also known as receipt books, not only provide clues on popular dishes, ingredients, and food preparation, but also information on medicinal remedies, household hints, pest management, personal hygiene, animal care, and dyes and finishes.  These volumes also give us glimpses into women’s lives outside the kitchen.

The manuscript recipe books are mainly from the New England and Mid Atlantic areas, with a few from England.  The books range in date from 1669 to the early 1900s; however, the majority is from the nineteenth century.

Recipe titles have been transcribed with original spellings; spelling corrections have been added in parentheses to enhance searchability.
